About the Event

The Sixteen Droplets of the Ancient Kadam Tradition

Bestowed by H.E. Gongkar Dorje Denpa Rinpoche

Many of the most powerful teachings and practices of the ancient Kadam tradition of Buddhism that emerged in Tibet following the great Bengali master Atisha (982-1054).

The ancient Kadam tradition was most notable for its emphasis on the Mahayana mind-training instructions for generating bodhicitta, the heart of awakening, and eventually these vast and deep teachings were assimilated into the Sakya tradition and all the main lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. The most precious of these became part of the Dzongpa lineage, which is a branch of the Sakya tradition, when the first Dorje Denpa, Kunga Namgyal, received them from the great philosopher, Taktsang Lotsawa.

Of its sacred Vajrayana practices, the most profound for fostering the generation of wisdom and compassion is said to be the rare cycle of initiations known as the Sixteen Droplets, a set of practices centred around Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. Having remained secret for many generations, nearly six hundred years on, H.H. the 41st Sakya Trichen conferred it upon His Eminence Gongkar Dorje Denpa Rinpoche and now Rinpoche is bestowing this transmission in Yulo Kopa, Australia.

This empowerment is a unique opportunity to receive initiation into a comprehensive range of Buddhist practices that support spiritual awakening for all our needs, one droplet within the next revealed in our hearts through the empowerment. This includes the initiations of Buddha of our age Shakyamuni for purifying negative emotions, the future Buddha Maitreya for the vast activities of bodhicitta, the Buddha of wisdom Manjushri for the profound view, peaceful Green Tara to overcome fears, Acala to clear inner obstacles, Mother Prajnaparamita for the realisation of ultimate reality, Buddha Vajradhara for swift accomplishment, Atisha for the blessings of the lineage, and many others.

On Saturday morning, Rinpoche will perform the creation of the mandala. Attendees may observe in silence or rest in preparation.

On Saturday afternoon, the empowerment will be bestowed. Attendees who wish to take the empowerment fully must commit to the samaya with the Guru of keeping bodhicitta and daily recitation of the six-syllable Avalokiteshvara mantra. Those taking the empowerment fully will receive the practice-text and may attend the next day’s teaching. Those who wish to just take the empowerment as a blessing may attend to receive the mantras and will receive a small print-out of them.
